iClone’s “Motion Director” game-style animation system

iClone XXXX came with a new way of animating characters called “Motion Director”.

This feature allows you to use your keyboard, mouse or even a game controller to maneuvre your character around a landscape in iClone – while you record its movements.

In general, the 3D industry tends to call this type of animation “motion matching”. If you google search for motion matching with Unreal, you’ll also see that ‘motion matching’ is also a feature that they are developing in Unreal Engine 5 and is getting more and more advanced.

The basic “theory” of “motion matching” is that you have a¬†database of character animation, and then the character¬†transitions between those animations in an intelligent way – based on the velocity and direction that the character moves.
